The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in FAO) in Bangladesh is inviting applications of qualified candidates for the following vacant position under the project OSRO/BGD/101/USA “Strengthening Emergency Preparedness and Response for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in Bangladesh”. incumbent will be recruited as a National Project Personnel:


Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative, the direct supervision of the Nutrition Officer, the functional guidance of the Lead Technical Officer (RAP) and in close collaboration with national and international consultants in the project team, the incumbent will undertake the following activities:

Liaise with the FAO team, DAE and/or NGOs sub-contracted for community mobilisation and facilitation in the selection of women farmers (through FFS) to benefit from horticulture packages;

Supervise the day to day activities of the horticulture interventions, including the selection of beneficiaries, the preparation of specifications of tree seedlings, vegetable seeds, fruit saplings, hand tools, watering cans and composting chemicals, their delivery to NGOs for onward distribution to groups of landless women farmers, and packaging of inputs for individual women farmers;

Assist DAE to train the groups of women farmers in improved fruit and vegetable production technologies (e.g. composting, seeds and seedling propagation, pest and weed control, conservation agriculture and water management) and post-harvest on-farm processing and storage using recognised participatory and group-based extension techniques;

Raise the awareness of the value of a collaborative programme within the Government, promoting simple horticulture processing methods suitable for village application in close collaboration with the nutritionist.

In collaboration with the nutritionist contribute to support the mainstreaming of nutrition in the horticulture programme

ensure full co-operation of the implementing partners (i.e. DAE, NGOs, women groups, etc) through regular attendance of Upazila Agricultural Rehabilitation and Improvement Committee meetings;

Assist the Farmer Field School/Farmers’ Training Specialist in the preparation of training material and training of farmers through FFSs, when required;

Design national home garden model for implementation.

Advise NPD on technical issues with regard to Horticulture during implementation and evaluation and ensure inclusion of necessary horticultural technical information in education campaigns and agricultural extension.

Prepare annual work plans, monthly progress statements and quarterly progress reports on the horticulture interventions of the project; and

Performing other related duties as required.
A university degree in natural sciences, agronomy or agriculture and post-graduate qualifications in horticulture, farm management or agricultural marketing (or related technical disciplines).
A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience and technical work within the context of introducing improved fruit and vegetable production practices for landless rural homesteads under agricultural and rural development projects.

The Horticulturalist should be familiar with homestead farming systems of landless rural households in southern Bangladesh.

The Horticulturalist should possess strong communication and computing skills (word processing and spreadsheets) and be fluent in spoken and written English.
